Shelley Hyland

What groups do you teach and where?

Brighton groups – Monday and Wednesday.
I teach all the groups at Huonville, Sorell and Orford.

Do you still dance?

Of course I still dance. Although I don’t compete at Eisteddfod’s anymore, I love performing and enjoy dancing on stage whilst leading the baby groups.

How long have you been dancing for?

I have been dancing since the age of 4, which makes over 30 years of dancing.

When and how did you start dancing?

I started dancing at Kindergarten and trained through Hobart Dance Academy and Kinetic Dance Studio.

Why do you love dancing?

Dancing makes you happy, keeps you fit and young at heart.

What is your favourite memory from dancing?

Where do I start? I remember being in tears with pride when our young students Ky Phillips and Lauryn Curtain were awarded the 1st Junior Scholarship at the Southern Tasmanian Dancing Eisteddfod.

Also, I had a proud mum moment when my son Jarvis won in the 6 year old jazz solo section.

How did you start teaching dancing?

I started teaching because 23 years ago there were only classes in Hobart. My goddaughter, Angelique Phillips was our first official student at Bridgewater and classes expanded rapidly from there.

I have loved every moment of teaching and have been lucky to meet so many friendly people. It’s a reward to see dancer’s confidence shine through into their everyday lives.
